Intercol Hockey: The Geoffrey Bean Cup.

The annual hockey game between PAOC and SPOC made a welcomed return late this year after the fixture was absent for a couple of years. In 2020 the match was not able to take place due to Covid restrictions while in 2021 PAOC retained the Cup due to a SPOC forfeit. The match this year was held on the evening of Wednesday 23 November 2022 at the Adelaide University Hockey Club pitch.

PAOC was represented by Nick Hoffman (2000), Hassan Singh (2021), Seb Foster, Reilly Hollamby (2019), Anthony Antoniadis (2005), Michael Staak (2010), Andrew Baillie (2004), Patrick Gabb (2014), Alexander Chapman (2000), Blake Anderson (2012), Jaxon Dell’Oro (2020), William Selway (2007) and Charlie Griffin (2021).

The opening minutes of the game were a good contest with PAOC controlling a majority of possession. It took a while, but this eventually led to a couple of goals to stamp an early 2-0 lead by the end of the first quarter. The second quarter would yield a similar result in two more goals to PAOC. SPOC had some chances but were unable to finish them off. Half time saw a few sore players, given the game was taking place three months after most had last touched a hockey stick. The pace of the game slowed a little in the second half, but the rate of scoring from PAOC remained. The full-time whistle blew with the score 10-0 to the Reds. Goal scorers were Anthony Antoniadis with a memorable hat-trick (for him at least), youngster Hassan Singh with a hat-trick in his first old scholars’ game, Reilly Hollamby 1 goal, Charlie Griffin 1 goal, Michael Staak 1 goal and Alexander Chapman 1 goal.

The result means that PAOC have now retained the Geoffrey Bean Cup for a record extending streak of 14 consecutive games spanning 2009 through to 2022 inclusive. We look forward to continuing the tradition in 2023, which marks 40 years since the first game was played in 1983 in which PAOC triumphed 3-2.
