2022 Intercol Cricket “Chester Bennett Cup”

News
7 March 2022

Sunday 20 February 2022, Main Oval, St Peter’s College Old Blues 9/181 def Old Reds 10/153.

The Old Reds won the toss and sent the Old Blues into bat.

The Old Reds were on top with Andrew Rumbelow (1981) and James Cleggett (2017) strangling the batsman on a green wicket. Cleggs did the damage early taking two wickets in his first six over spell, while old boy Rumbles bowled nine tight overs straight up going for 15.

The change bowlers of Riley Chapman (2018) and Hamish Porter (2017) kept it relatively tidy keeping the old boys to 50 at tea. After tea the game got away from us, with a couple of the seasoned Old Blues batting with cool heads against our spinners. Young leg spinner Charlie Griffin (2021) struck twice to remove the two set batsmen but some late hitting at the end got the St Peters boys to a decent score. The Old Reds were set 182 to win.

Notable performers with the ball were James Cleggett with 3/30 and Charlie Griffin with 2/30.

Our batting innings started poorly with Riley Chapman and Harry Hockney (2017) falling cheaply and leaving us 2/12. A decent partnership by Jack Latchford (2012) and James Cleggett got us to 75 before they both fell. Consistent wickets throughout the rest of the innings, despite a gritty knock from Rumbles, we were dismissed 29 runs short. Notable performers with the bat were Jack Latchford with 53 and Andrew Rumbelow with 21.

Despite the loss, it was a great day and we all enjoyed having a beer at the pub with the SPOC boys after the game. Hats off to the three Kensington boys, James Cleggett, Hamish Porter and Andrew Rumbelow, and Henry Jay for umpiring.

Thanks to the St Peter’s Old Collegians for hosting a great day.
