PAOCA London Chapter Dinners have been held consistently for well over a century now, with energy, passion, spirit and revelry, much to the bemusement of our British cohabitants. The 2022 instalment was no exception.

An impressive squad of powerful red roosters flocked in V-formation and descended upon the historic Caledonian Club in prestigious Belgravia, hosted by the generous and crafty Henry Lawton (2005), who had expertly maximised his reciprocal club privileges. Mr Lawton also showcased delicious Coopers beer and hometown wine, kindly leveraging the access bestowed by his representative position in the office of the Agent-General for South Australia. Well played and three votes to that man.

A truly exceptional evening followed.

It is always a joy to see fine red men besuited, with a range of interpretations of black tie on display, and RM Williams boots featuring prominently.

Old hands and big names including David Ross “DG” Gray, Gus Carracher, Grant “Maca” McDonald and Chad “Fergo” Ferguson, were flanked by newer blood, including Ned “Sherlock” Holmes, Declan “D” Sharp, Matty Claxton and Jerome “Oxford” Squires.

The speeches and toasts were immense. Master of Toasts Colin “SuperCat” Frearson delivered on his promise to the boys, and reneged on his promise to the wife, with a rollicking display featuring touching toasts, and extraordinary dance moves at de facto Club Little Italy in the wee hours.

Lawton’s Response to the Loyal Toast (for the first done for this Group, dedicated to the new King) was pithy and slick. Leigh “Big Bird” Schelvis’ Response to the SuperCat’s Toast to the School was equal parts hilarious and professional, with expert delivery the calibre of which we’ve come to expect. Great return for the large man.

Perhaps the highlight of the evening’s formal stanza however was the truly impressive, touching and powerful call to arms delivered by Marcus Thompson. Reflecting on our good fortune and brotherhood and the sacrifices made by our parents for our education, Thompson implored the cohort to feel and express gratitude, and grasp the opportunity ahead. Those gathered could not recall a finer speech given at an Old Collegians event. Truly outstanding.

The formality closed with gravity in dedication to the late Frank Garrett (PAC 1940-42), and of course Doug Charlton (PAC 1956-1960) with Hugo “Huge” Martin (2011), in town from Belgium, giving well this year’s Toast to the Inner Ratbag.

Levity followed, with a core dozen or so making their way to Soho, chinning pints and throwing shapes into the red eye hours, closing a truly enjoyable and intimate evening of oratory, kinship, and tomfoolery.

We look ahead to 2023 longing and wishing all at home every good fortune.
